HAR File Sanitizer & PII Stripper

Last Updated: October 13, 2026

No file selected.

Up to 25 MB and 5,000 entries, in HAR 1.2 format. Files without a log.entries array, or with a malformed request or response, are rejected rather than partially cleaned. JSON, form-encoded, and text bodies are inspected; images, fonts, and other binary payloads are reported as unsupported and copied through unchanged.

Redaction Rules

Presets toggle a whole group. Every rule can also be switched on its own. Rules that match on value shape are the only ones that can prove they worked, so they are listed with a confidence level.

  • Load a HAR file to see the full inspection rules for this file.

Your HAR file stays in browser memory and is processed by a local Web Worker. Nothing is uploaded, and no matched secret value is ever shown in this page or sent anywhere. This tool redacts what its rules recognize; it is not a guarantee that a trace contains no other sensitive data.

How To Use

Follow these simple steps to get started with har file sanitizer & pii stripper.

1

Load your HAR file

Drag a .har export onto the upload area or browse for one. The file is read locally and never uploaded.

2

Pick your rules

Start with a preset, or toggle individual rules. Each one shows how many values it matched in your capture so you can judge the blast radius.

3

Scan and review findings

Click Scan HAR. Review each finding by entry, location, and rule. Use the filters to narrow a long list, and uncheck anything you need to keep.

4

Sanitize and download

Click Sanitize & Prepare Download, read the verification summary, then download the clean .har file for your issue or ticket.

Real-World Examples

Bug Reports

Attach a HAR to a GitHub issue or support ticket without shipping your session cookie or API key along with it.

Third-Party Debugging

Send a capture to a vendor or contractor while keeping credentials and personal data on your side of the connection.

API Integration Reviews

Share the exact request and response shapes with a colleague when the useful part is the payload, not the authorization header.

Compliance Review

Produce a shareable trace for a privacy or security review where customer identifiers and payment data must not travel.

Why Use This Tool

Discover how this tool can improve your workflow and productivity.

See What Is In The File

A scan lists every sensitive value it found with the exact request entry, header, parameter, or body field it came from, so you know what you are about to share.

You Choose What Goes

Each finding can be included or excluded, and every rule can be switched off. A broad rule such as OAuth code parameters can be disabled when your trace depends on it.

Structural Integrity Kept

Names, cookie attributes, key order, and indentation survive redaction. The output is still a valid HAR file your browser or API client can open.

Honest Verification

After redaction the file is scanned again. If any value shape still matches, the tool says so instead of claiming a clean result.

Nothing Leaves Your Device

Parsing and redaction run in a local Web Worker. Your capture is never uploaded, and matched secret values are never shown on the page.

What Is HAR File Sanitizer & PII Stripper?

A HAR sanitizer inspects an HTTP Archive capture for credentials and personal data, then rewrites the selected values in place. It matches on header names, cookie names, query and form parameter names, JSON property names, and conservative value shapes, then rescans its own output to confirm the redaction worked.

About This Tool

The Capture You Are About To Attach

A HAR file is the closest thing the web has to a security camera. It records every request your browser made, including the full URL, every header, every cookie, and usually every response body. Export one while logged into an application and you have a file containing your session cookie, your API key, and the personal data of everyone the page loaded.

That is why sending a HAR to a stranger is risky. Most bug reports never need the credential. They need to know that the request went to the wrong endpoint with the wrong body.

What Gets Matched

Matching happens on names first. Headers such as Authorization and X-API-Key are redacted by name. Every cookie value is redacted while cookie names and attributes like Path and HttpOnly stay readable. Query and form parameters named token, apikey, password, clientsecret, and similar are redacted wherever they appear, including inside the raw URL string, not only in the structured parameter list.

JSON bodies are matched on property name, so a property called password or ssn has its whole value replaced, including when that value is an object. Value-shape rules then catch what no name would reveal: an email address in a note field, a 16-digit number that passes the Luhn check, a bearer token in a plain-text body.

Some Rules Are Deliberately Off

Redaction tools fail in two directions. Too aggressive and the trace stops being useful. Too timid and the secret survives. Rules that can misfire on ordinary data ship disabled or carry a caution: OAuth code parameters, because code is a common product field name. Address fields, because address usually means a wallet or a MAC in a web trace. US social security number patterns, because that shape is specific to one country.

Each rule shows how many values it matched before you apply anything, so the cost of enabling a broad rule is visible up front.

What The Tool Cannot Promise

Bodies are inspected only when their content type is JSON, form-encoded, or text. Images, fonts, and archives are reported as unsupported and copied through untouched. A body that claims to be JSON but does not parse gets value-shape rules only, and its findings are marked partial. A secret stored in a format nothing recognizes will not be found.

Treat a clean scan as a strong result, not a certificate. After downloading, load the file again with every rule enabled. If the second scan reports nothing, the trace no longer contains what this tool knows how to look for.

Quick Summary

Sanitize HAR files locally in your browser. Detects Authorization and API key headers, all cookie values, token and secret query parameters, OAuth codes, embedded URL credentials, and PII fields and patterns in JSON, form-encoded, and text bodies. Shows every match with its exact request entry and field name, lets you include or exclude each one, replaces values with [REDACTED] while preserving key order and cookie attributes, and rescans the output to verify the result. Limits: 25 MB, 5,000 entries, and 2 MB per body. Binary bodies are reported as unsupported and copied through unchanged.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about har file sanitizer & pii stripper.

What is a HAR file and why is it risky to share?

A HAR file is the JSON record a browser or API client saves when you export a network capture. It is a complete transcript: every request URL, every header, every cookie, and usually every response body. Because it captures whatever your session was authorized to do, an unsanitized HAR routinely contains session cookies, bearer tokens, API keys, and personal data from the pages you visited.

How do I remove sensitive data from a HAR file?

Load the .har file into this tool, click Scan HAR, and review the findings list. Each row shows the location and the rule that matched, with a checkbox to keep it or exclude it. Click Sanitize & Prepare Download, then download the sanitized copy. Cookie names, parameter names, JSON keys, and cookie attributes are preserved so the trace still reads correctly.

Does the tool upload my HAR file anywhere?

No. The file is read by a Web Worker inside your browser tab. Nothing is sent to a server, and matched secret values never leave the worker or appear on the page. The findings list shows structural locations such as log.entries[12].request.headers and a field name, never the value that matched.

Can I choose which rules run instead of redacting everything?

Yes. There are three presets and each rule can be toggled individually. Sensitive-field rules run on JSON property names, and value-shape rules run on content. Broad rules such as OAuth code parameters, national ID fields, and address fields ship disabled or carry a caution note because they can match ordinary data. Disable a rule when your trace depends on that value being readable.

Will the sanitized HAR still open in my tools?

Yes. Redaction replaces values in place and keeps the original JSON structure, key order, property spelling, and detected indentation. The result is a valid HAR 1.2 file. Binary bodies such as images and fonts are never decoded or rewritten, so those entries are byte-identical to your original.

What does it not scan?

Bodies are inspected only when their content type is JSON, form-encoded, or text. Images, fonts, archives, and other binary payloads are reported as unsupported and copied through unchanged. A body that declares JSON but does not parse is scanned with value-shape rules only, and those findings are marked partial. The scan summary lists every one of these cases.

How do I verify the file is actually clean?

Use the verification pass. After redaction the tool rescans its own output with every rule enabled. Name-based rules will still match because names are kept on purpose, so the tool reports only value-shape matches as remaining problems. If nothing remains, loading the downloaded file again and running a scan with all rules enabled should report no matches.

What size HAR files are supported?

Up to 25 MB and 5,000 entries. Individual bodies over 2 MB are reported as unsupported instead of being decoded, which keeps scanning predictable on long captures. Exports must follow the HAR 1.2 log format: files without a log.entries array, or with a malformed request or response, are rejected rather than partially cleaned.

Why is an address field rule turned off by default?

The name address is too broad to trust. In web traces it just as often refers to a blockchain wallet, a MAC address, or an internal mail routing address rather than a postal location. It ships disabled with a caution note. The same reasoning applies to the US social security number rule, which is shaped for one country's convention.

Will the output file be smaller than my original?

Not necessarily, and the tool does not claim it will be. Redaction replaces long secrets with a short placeholder, which usually shrinks the file, but the tool re-serializes the document to apply changes, so whitespace and file size can move either way. Compare the byte counts in the summary rather than assuming a reduction.
